"I found more pillows and blankets upstairs," Eliot said, trying to carry a pile of linens taller than he was down the stairs without tripping over Val. "I bet with these we could make the whole living room into a fort!"

He tripped on the last stair, flinging the linens in front of him and tumbling into them with a big *fwoof*.

"An' I found a whole bunch of toy swords an' knives an' things," he said from the pile. "This place is so cool."

"There's lots of orange soda and popsicles in the fridge," Parker pointed out, hanging down from the top of the entertainment center. "And Froot Loops! And we could get more at Luke's, probably." That Kenzi girl might let them have some, right?

"We're probably good for tonight," Eliot decided. "But we should keep that in mind for tomorrow."

"Yup!" Parker hopped down and surveyed the fort with pleasure. "This isn't a girls-keep-out-fort, is it?"

"Nah," Eliot said. "I only make those when I need to keep out my sister." Which admittedly was often. And then Gertie cried even harder because Eliot totally let their next door neighbor come in and she was a girl and then Mom yelled at him for being mean to Gertie and also that bedroom wasn't going to clean itself, mister, if he didn't clean up by the end of the day she was going to come through with a trashbag and throw everything on the floor away!

There was a reason why Eliot spent most of his time outside hiding in improbable places.

"Is she bigger or littler than you?" Parker asked, crouching down to crawl inside, pausing to sniff with approval.

"Littler," Eliot said. "And so annoying!!!" He emphasized his point with his hands spread wide on either side of his face as he grimaced at the ceiling. "She can't do anything yet and all she wants to do is follow me around and get me in trouble."

Parker hunkered down and grabbed a pillow, hugging it to herself. "She might get more fun. When she's bigger." Her mouth was set in a thin grimace.

"D'you have a little sister?" Eliot asked, not sure yet why she was reacting like that.

"No." Parker looked away, and looked back, then away again. "Brother. But not any more."

"Oh." Eliot was tempted to ask what she meant by that, but there were plenty of people in his books that lost siblings, so he had at least a little bit of an idea. ". . . D'ya want one?"

Parker's expression went a little unhinged with surprise. "What?"

"A little sister," Eliot said. "You can have mine. Cheap."

His mother would give him such a whallop upside the head if she heard that.

"How cheap?" Parker paused. "Wait. How little?"

'Cause if she was way little, then nope.

"She still reads Go Dog Go," Eliot said.

So, you know, old enough to read, but probably only barely.

"Maaaybe," Parker said cautiously. This buying a kid to be her sister thing had possibilities. "How much? Ice cream? Money? I could maybe get you another puppy."

"I'm pretty good on puppies," Eliot decided. Val yipped from where she was trying to dig her way through a pile of cushions. "Make me an offer."

That's what his dad said when people tried to bargain at his store.

"Umm... oh! A bike? I could get you a bike!" By legal or extracurricular means! Who didn't love bikes? ... well, Parker, but there weren't any cars around this place, so Eliot should be safe. "Orrrr pizza and more books?"

"Bike sounds good," Eliot decided. "I can get my own books pretty easy, and it'd be pretty cool to try riding down all those stairs!"

Parker's expression grew a little pinched. "But you have to be careful," she insisted. "And a helmet. And, kneepads... maybe not a bike. Maybe a skateboard." Yes! A skateboard for a sister!

"But I'm really good at bikes! Almost as good as I am at horses."

The advantage of horses being they could decide he was a reckless idiot and stop listening to him when he wanted to try something stupid.

Now Parker was feeling really torn. "You can ride horses?" she asked, voice low and a little disbelieving. "For reals."

"Sure!" Eliot grinned and exaggerated his own little kid drawl. "What kin'a cowboy would I be if'n I couldn't ride horses?"
